Little boys are just so cute. Yes little girls are adorable too. Lala (Twyla my sister) her two girls, Amber and Brandi and their boys came out to the garden last Friday. I was talking to my dad last spring and said to dad, “plant some pumpkins for the little boys on the edge of the garden.” Well the pumpkins were planted and when I went to look at the garden for the first time this year I could not hold back my surprise. Wow did my dad ever plant some pumpkins! The little boys, Cape and Graham had a fun time climbing on the pumpkins and the lawnmowers. Two little cousins, buddies playing, climbing, sweating, clapping, smiling just having fun. What a joy to watch! Thanks Amber, Brandi and Twyla for coming and sharing the morning with us!

During many events in our lifetime I can look back and remember where I was when the event occurred. When Ron and I left NC going to a World Wakeboard Tournament to watch our Grandson, Tyler we left Pale Moon tied to the dock secure thinking all would be well if a storm or winds blew in….

Going to Indiana; watching Tyler was a surprise to him, he did not know we were coming. As Tyler drove into his driveway and saw us he raised his hands up and said, “No way!” Over the next few days we were in awe of the determination, skill and poise that he showed in the tournament. We were excited to watch the competition, it was fun to watch Tyler with his friends and doing something; wakeboarding that he loves. When all was said and done Tyler came in 6th in the WORLD.

After being with Tyler and his family we headed for Texas. Ron has had some consulting work at the fiberglass plant he retired from. We heard and started watching the weather in anticipation of Hurricane Irene hitting the East Coast, not just anyplace, somewhere about 14 miles from where Pale Moon was sitting at the dock. We felt confident in how we had left Pale Moon at the dock but as time passed and reports came in and we heard about the possibility of Irene being a category 3 or 4 that confidence started to wane. Our neighbor and the staff at the marina doubled up the lines on the dock did what they could to help her be safe and we all waited. Ron was feeling that sick feeling in his stomach and we both felt helpless, we could do nothing but wait. Irene did bring alot of rain and wind. The towns around where Pale Moon is had about a 9.5 water surge and wind gusts of up to 115. We were not able to hear for a couple of days if Pale Moon had survived or not and then a friend of a friend went to the dock to give us a report. We are so grateful, Pale Moon does not seem to have suffered any damage from the hurricane. We will be traveling back to NC in the next week or so and we will both be smiling as we open up and air her out. We were safe in Texas during Hurricane Irene, I bet Pale Moon has a story to tell all her own.

Spencer at 21 years of age was one of the soldiers that was shot down in the Chinook helicopter this past week. My mind keeps flashing back to Spencer holding onto Megan’s skirt standing next to Tanner and they are both smiling waiting for mom to talk so they can go home after church. Watching Dale hold Spencer’s hand as they walk to the car. I only knew Spencer as a young child. My heart wants to say thank-you to that young man who held our county so dear, Spencer is an American Hero. Leaving behind two younger brothers, Tanner while at boot camp I believe in the Marines and Calder still in High School. I have read about the boys and family by following Megan’s blog; Motherwords. The parents that Megan and Dale are; they are gentle and love their family with a passion. Knowing Megan and Dale I am sure they had conflicting feelings when two of the boys joined the military during a war. With that being said as parents they are supportive and Spencer left to defend our freedom. My freedom looks alot different with a face that I know on it. From the words that I have read on Megan’s blog the boys knew their direction in life and as parents they were willing to let go and let them find their purpose. Spencer has given the greatest gift of sacrifice; it is a sacrifice for all of the family. Many lives will be changed forever. I wish this were not so…. My prayer is one of comfort and love for your family. I dedicate the pictures to the Duncan Family.

Pale Moon is at a marina about a 30 min drive by car from Oriental, NC. When we go by boat to Oriental it takes us about 3 1/2 hours. About once a week we drive to Oriental so we can get coffee at “The Bean” and walk around town and look at the shrimp boats. Foxy Lady was out on the water working when we made the Pamlico crossing going to Ocracoke Island. While we were in Oriental last week Foxy Lady was in port and I was able to take a few pictures. We love to look at the shrimp boats, smell the fresh shrimp which is not the greatest smell…. and go to the local fish market knowing we are buying the freshest shrimp that are from the fishing boats. We bought shrimp and brought it home and had an old fashion shrimp boil with corn on the cob, potatoes, and onions.

It has been since October of 2009 when I first heard of Ocracoke Island that I became enamored with the idea of visiting the island. In more than one conversations about possible boating trips I would slip in the name Ocracoke. I talked and dreamed about going and it became somewhat of a joke and Ron would smile when I would bring up the idea of going to Ocracoke. We are in New Bern, NC and to get to Ocracoke we have to boat across the Pamlico Sound which is a large body of water and the conditions need to be in our favor; not much wind so that we are not fighting waves for such a long distance. We had a trip planned this month to Cape Look-Out just south of Beaufort, NC with some boating friends from New Bern. These friends have boys in High School / one going to college and after conversations they decided they wanted to take them to Ocracoke so there would be more for them to do. I was smiling, I knew that I had my window of opportunity… Ron said yes, lets go. We left for Ocracoke on Monday July 25 and boated to Oriental. We got up early on Tuesday morning and left for OCRACOKE….. oh yes I was so excited! We had calm seas across the Pamlico Sound and into the inlet of Ocracoke Island.

The only way to reach Ocracoke Island is by ferry, boat or private plane. The lack of a bridge gives the island a remote feel. Most of the island is un-developed and part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The island has beautiful beaches, a maritime forest, campgrounds and a population of wild ponies. Most people ride around town on bicycles, golf carts or walk. We had our bikes on board Pale Moon and we bike all over town and to the beaches. The island has many rental places, there are water sports, a historic museum and a hiking trail.

I was not disappointed, the island was well worth the wait. We stayed at the National State Park Docks. Many of Ocracoke’s attractions are simple and unfettered, not so many of the usual tourist trappings. We took walks on the beach looking for sea shells, we visited the working Ocracoke Lighthouse, bike to the coffee shop in the mornings, walked to the center of town in the evenings and listened to the different genres of music coming from the different restaurants. You get the idea…. Now I am thinking about when we can plan our next trip to Ocracoke…..

Ocracoke is called the “Pearl” of the Outer Banks and we can see why.

Between the smoke from the fires around the area in the NC area on the East coast and the extreme hot weather the days have felt like the dog days of Summer. We are settled in at North West Creek Marina. Walking Coco in the area is good for her and us. We can walk the mile circle at least 3 to 4 times a day and we both get some exercise in. Coco has struggled in the heat; we try to keep her in the shade when walking and walk during the cooler temps of the day.

We have been by car to Oriental a few times this month, Oriental is one of our favorite places to visit. We went with friends from New Bern to Atlantic Beach the Thursday before July 4th. We are planning a trip to Ocracoke weather permitting next week. My birthday has come and gone for another year, Ron makes the whole month of July special for me and the day of my birthday was fun. We spent part of the day going to some flea market shops. I found two flute books and spent 53 cents. I was happy. We took a sunset cruise on the water in the dinghy, we bought fresh shrimp from the shrimp boats in Oriental and stopped by a farmer’s market on the way back to Pale Moon. The evening meal was fresh shrimp and fresh corn cooked on the grill. Mmmm so good, eating on the upper helm, conversation; knowing we are so blessed!

Tomorrow we will go shopping and provision the boat for our trip next week. We are both excited to be traveling again for a few days.

We have been back in New Bern for about two weeks. We decided to boat in and around the New Bern area for the rest of this boating season and possibly over the next few years for as long as we have Coco. When we were out on the cruise to Washington DC Coco did great most of the time but as the weather got warmer she physically could not handle the heat. When we are out on the hook; anchoring out we do not run our air conditioners. It gets hot on Pale Moon. When we are at the dock we can hook up to electricity and cool off the cabin for Coco. We decided it is not fair to Coco as we tote her pretty much where ever we go as she ages to put her in stressful conditions. We are planning some trips as we watch the weather to the Outter Banks. I have been wanting to go to Okracoke on another cruise we will go to Beaufort, NC. Cape-Lookout is usually much cooler than other areas and that we can probably anchor out and Coco would be fine.

We have moved to a different marina, Northwest Creek Marina about 6-7 miles from New Bern. Since we will be here during hurricane season it is important to make a plan. Northwest Creek is a natural hurricane hole and if there is a named storm we do not have to move Pale Moon off the dock. The staff at Northwest Creek has been very friendly and professional. We put our name on a waiting list because the marina is usually full. What was great is that the staff actually moved some boats around in the marina to accommodate the fact that we needed a starboard bow in slip. We can drive into New Bern within 15 minutes to go to church, shop or just walk around downtown. It is easier to leave Pale Moon here and have her looked after if we have to plan a quick trip.

I have a cousin, Sandy that travels for her job on the East Coast at times. Last Thursday Sandy drove 2 hours to come and see us and meet for dinner. We so enjoyed the visit and getting caught up on some family conversation. We both found ourselves smiling as we had some things in common that can only be inherited. Thanks Sandy for the visit! Someday we hope you will bring your family and we can take you out on Pale Moon for the day.

The pictures are of random shots over the past two weeks. The full moon one night was so beautiful! It is hard to believe that another month is coming to an end.

A protected marina on the Intracoastal Waterway at MM 173 with year-round boating, floating docks, private steam showers, and transient dockage. We are at River Dunes Marina. What a place to relax before returning to New Bern. It has been quiet and restful. We cleaned the salt water off Pale Moon the first day we arrived. The marina has a van to check out for a drive into the village of Oriental, we took the van and picked up some needed groceries. We have been able to swim, sit in the hot tub and in the evening after we walk Coco we sit on the upper helm and enjoy the view. It is hard to believe we have been gone two months and that we got to see Washington DC and so many things in-between. We will be boating in and out of New Bern for the rest of the boating season. There is a life-time of boating in the NC area. I was looking at the pictures of the trip and realize that it really is like living a dream to be able to see all the places in our pictures. I am so grateful for friends and family that have been an encouragement to us.

Leaving Great Bridge, Va we traveled back into the waters of NC. Even though we call NC our home 9 months of the year we felt as if we are home. Arriving in Coinjock we docked and took Coco for her evening walk.

Coinjock is also known as Church’s Island by locals because of a decayed church that was once a landmark of the tiny community. Coinjock is bordered by Currituck Sound to the east; the North River lies to the west. Residents suggest the name Coinjock is of Native American origin referring to mulberries, which might have been prevalent in the area many years ago. There are no mulberry trees there now.

Coinjock Marina Restaurant has been a favorite of locals and traveling yachtsmen alike since 1978.

Serving only the freshest local seafood available, the Coinjock Marina Restaurant is also known as “Home of the 32oz prime rib”. While sitting on the upper helm we hear a helicopter noise and there on the back lawn of the restaurant the helicopter landed. You never know what we might see next.

We crossed the Albemarle Sound the next day and settled in at Alligator River Marina. We stayed there two days, the first day we started out and were greeted on the radio by some fellow boaters(friends from New Bern) coming from the south telling us that the smoke coming in from Stumpy Point was too thick on the water to navigate through. We turned around and delayed our trip south for a day. Vicarious hailed us on the radio as they were coming through Alligator River Bridge and we chatted for a few minutes and walked down to the edge of the sound spotting their sail boat and watched them as they started their trip north across the sound. Always great to hear from good friends!

Sometimes there are moments that make goosebumps on our arms. Sometimes we can glance and see the most amazing things in nature. The past few days we have been making our way back south towards New Bern, NC our home port. We left the Chesapeake having made so many fun memories, and have had a few goosebumps along the way. We sure enjoyed our trip to Washington DC. We left Point Lookout at the mouth of the Potomac and started across the mouth of the Chesapeake . We saw several schools of Dolphins. Ron could see them diving and swimming under Pale Moon. We spent a few days in Deltaville and then on to Hampton, Va where I was able to visit with my long time friend, Kim. We traveled to Great Bridge, Va and arrived here in Coinjock today.

While we were in Great Bridge, Va at Atlantic Yacht Basin last month I noticed and took a picture of an older wooden boat called a Trumpy. The boat was out of the water and restoration work was being completed. Yesterday when we arrived at Atlantic Yacht Basin we noticed that the Trumpy was in the water, the Coast Guard was there for an inspection. Ron talked to the dock-master and he said that this boat’s name was actually Sequoia and was at one time the Presidential Yacht. I was able to take a few pictures and then we walked along the dock to get a closer look. Presidents from Herbert Hoover , Franklin D Roosevelt, J F Kennedy and Ronald Regan to name a few were on and used the Yacht. The boat is now owned by a private company.
